Sometimes you go somewhere and it takes you by surprise.. Whitby Abbey was one of those places.
I hadn’t actually planned on visiting Whitby Abbey because I thought it was closed during the time I was in the area. However, because of a sunny weekend day & there being no car parks in the town centre I drove to the top of the hill to park instead. I had intended on walking down the hill to Whitby below when I discovered the Whitby Abbey was actually open. So I paid the £7.60 entrance fee and went in.
And I am glad I did!

- The dates on which we celebrate Easter were decided at Whitby Abbey
- Whitby Abbey was bombed in WWI
- The first monastery was founded in around 657 however the current ruins date from the 13th century
- The grounds and buildings were actually privately owned from around the 1500’s till around 1920 when it was passed to the English Ministry of Works
- Whitby Abbey had around 146,277 visitors in 2015
- Whitby Abbey & Whitby was an inspiration to Bram Stoker when he was writing Dracula – and it’s not hard to see why

It was nice day that day too.. well cold but nice haha. The view over the town below was really nice! This is one area I’d love to go back to & perhaps stay so I can explore more 😊
