I can’t sleep – that part is nothing new, so I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite travel quotes (for lack of anything else to do at 2am!)…
I’m not sharing these quotes to sound wanky or anything.. I’m just sharing them because they mean something to me.
This is my favourite quote – although I don’t believe the Dalai Lama has ever said this. I like it though because it challenges me to go somewhere different each year. I’m not just talking about an overseas holiday or even a holiday at all. For me it can mean going somewhere that I haven’t been in the city I live in. It’s about exploring our world – wherever you are!
This is another favourite – I remember the first time I saw the moon when I was on the other side of the world and I remember thinking “you are just the same here as you are at home”. I think it was then I realised that the world wasn’t that big after all and at the end of the day, we are actually all the same.
Again, I don’t think you have to use this quote for travel. Even if you walk down the streets of the city you live in and maybe go down a different road or turn a corner you wouldn’t normally turn into, you will be amazed at what you discover.
I could wait for someone to want to do the exact same trip as me or I could just plan & go on my own. If people want to come then they can come or we can arrange to meet up somewhere, but I am not going to sit around waiting for someone else to decide my travel plans.
Another one that could be applied to everyday life. You don’t have to travel to see the beauty in things. It’s amazing the amount of people who don’t even know their own city. I remember talking to people who lived in London who had never been to St Paul’s Cathedral – it’s not like it’s hard to get to or anything, it’s just that people walk past it every day without even thinking of going inside. Play a tourist in your own town – how are you meant to sell it to others if you don’t even know what’s cool about your own city?
To be fair – this is an everyday occurrance for me. I’ve been known to go into town after work for something and come back with about 100 photos just because. I love photos & I love taking photos.. it’s always exciting to go to a new place so I can take different photos.
Cliche, but true. Oh the stories I could tell.. well not really but you get the drift. Something exciting always seems to happen when you’re on holiday – whether it be the time you & your niece happened to randomly start chatting to the local druggies on your first day in Hawaii or the time you got on the wrong train in London because you were so excited about having just met your favourite actor after a play. Or even the time you got proposed to by Elmo in Times Square…
The journey for me is a huge part of the whole travel process. How you get there, the decisions you make is really what defines who you are as a person.
Not just a travel quote.. but pretty much could be applied to anything in life. If there is one thing we are certain with life is that it is short. You never really know how much time you have on this earth. I think of my best friend from high school .. we were 18 when she died, I still think about where she would be if she had lived. Would she have been a traveller like me? Would we even still be friends. Life is too short to have regrets.
So there you have it.. some of my favourite quotes. I could have gone on forever but I thought 10 was a good round number for this hour of the morning! I hope you have found something inspiration in there – whether it be for travel or for something different..
And finally… always remember to….
