I have a confession, I love to plan. I mean I really, really love it!
I like the feeling of control that a good plan gives me. Of course, that’s not to say that sometimes those well planned moments go awry but I think that adds to the fun of it.
What I really love planning, though is travel. Whether I am going for a 5 week adventure overseas, a couple weeks in my hometown or even if I am just flying from Brisbane to Sydney for weekend away; I will have various plans for each scenario. Some people might say it’s too controlling and you can’t have fun if every minute is planned out. I think that if I am spending good money on going somewhere, then I am damn well going to do as much as I possibly can.
Some of the ways I like to plan:
I have like a thousand notebooks! Ok, maybe a slight exaggeration but I have a lot! I love stationary so I have a lot of pens and notebooks, of course I can never seem to find them when I need them! Anyway, I digress.. what I like to do when planning a trip, especially a big one, is have one notebook where I will do all my planning, make notes about different itineraries I could be doing, how I’m going to get there, what everything is going to cost. I will also write journal entries as my planning progresses and when I go on the trip, I take the notebook with me and it serves as a journal while I’m away. This way I have everything associated with that trip in one handy place so I can go back to it at any time during or after the said trip.
Blank Calendar Pages
I have a couple of these – I have a completely blank one that I got from Kikki K once but I also use the blank calendar pages you can get from Outlook. They are really handy just to get an idea of how your trip looks. You can write lists, sure I mean who doesn’t love a good list! But these are awesome to see everything at a glance – you can be as descriptive as you want, or you can write in code. It’s been 12 years since I worked at Air New Zealand but I still use the 3 letter codes for airports when I am writing them down… CHC = Christchurch, BNE = Brisbane, CPH = Copenhagen.
I LOVE Google Maps!!! One of the best things invented in my opinion. I love finding out where I’m staying, how far it is to the nearest transport spot, locating those must see attractions and figure out how I’m going to get there! Since my first trip to London, I have become pretty proficient in the locale of most things in London and the Tube Map! If you are going to London, study the Tube Map! It’s a great way to get around and not as daunting as it looks! Another thing with Google Maps I love doing is the Street View. I like looking at the area that I am going to be staying or visiting, just to get a feel for the place.
Pinterest is not only a great source for getting travel information, tips & tricks; it’s also a great place to store that information. I have a number of different ‘boards’ set up for travel stuff, one are things I want to see/do on an epic trip I am planning in 2017 and another I have for things I am wanting to do on a trip to the UK, Ireland & Copenhagen in 2015.
So they are just couple of things I use when planning travel.
